The Eye Institute of Xiamen University (EIXU) was founded in 2007 to provide resources for ophthalmology research, medical education and development of new technology and products. It serves as the host institute of the Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and Visual Science.
The research team of EIXU comprises Chang Jiang Scholar Professor, tenured professors, overseas visiting professors, laboratory specialists, post-doctoral researchers, visiting researchers and post-graduate students. It is a team with esprit, passion, and creativity.
The basic research base of EIXU is located in Xiang'an campus of Xiamen University with well-equipped labs and experimental platforms. Clinical research centers, including Xiamen University affiliated Xiamen Eye Center and the departments of Ophthalmology of other affiliated general hospitals of Xiamen University, host many clinical platforms such as National Key Clinical Specialty, National Drug Clinical Trail Center, and Ophthalmology Residency Training Center.
The main research directions of EIXU include cornea and ocular surface diseases, corneal tissue engineering, limbal stem cell, corneal immunity, angiogenesis in ocular diseases, myopia pathological mechanism, age-related macular degeneration as well as diabetic retinopathy. The research team pays much attention to translational medicine research. Great efforts are exerted to investigate molecular mechanism of various eye diseases and explore new therapeutic methods.
The research team of EIXU has been well funded by national and local governments. In the past three years, our research projects were supported by more than 30 research grants and the total amount of research funds is more than 40 million RMB.
In the past three years, the researchers of EIXU have made major progress in many eye research areas including corneal tissue engineering, limbal stem cells, ocular surface squamous metaplasia, and dry eye. More than 40 research papers have been published in international peer-reviewed journals, 12 national patents were filed based on our findings. In addition, our team was awarded the first prize of Xiamen Municipal Science and Technology Progress, the first prize of Fujian Provincial Science and Technology Progress, the third prize of Chinese Medical Association, Yun-Shen Youth Science and Technology Award, and etc.
Our goal is to establish a high-class research platform of ophthalmology and visual science research in the world, an educational platform to improve basic and clinical eye research inChina, a communication platform to promote cooperation of Chinese and international ophthalmology community. The staff of EIXU adheres to the motto of Xiamen University, self-improvement, striving for perfection, to promote the scientific spirit of rigorous, realistic, freedom, and innovation. The team is dedicated to develop EIXU into one of the nation's best ophthalmic basic and clinical science research center in the near future.
